History of the Piece
This is a Pablo Picasso Piece made from June to July of 1907 and is called The Ladies of Avignon. It is a painting of five naked women in Cubism style, and it refers to Avignon Street in Barcelona and its home to the prostitutes Pablo frequented. This piece was made during his African-Influenced era between 1907-1909. Picasso was a pioneer of Cubism and invented collage, he attended the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. I picked Picasso because I like the way Cubism looks, like sophisticated abstract art, and his pieces tell a story. I did all hand building, rolled a slab and then hand-rolled coils for the defining lines on the face, used a rolling pin to roll out the eyes and a fettling knife to cut them, and the hair pieces, and scored and slipped it on. My biggest challenge was painting it neatly and my biggest success was having it turn out almost as perfect as I imagined. I used all underglaze for the colors, I used black, banana yellow, and a bit of the soft pink glaze. Then the clear glaze after the first firing.
